Benefits of Having a Plumbing Contractor

When I started my business as a plumbing contractor I spoke with a colleague who had retired from the plumbing business. I asked him what was most important for my fledgling business to turn out well. He told me that there were only two things to truly worry about and those are pricing and quality of labor. If I focus on superior quality of work at a decent cost I would never have to be concerned about keeping a client.

One true concern he had for me was that as soon as a plumber becomes extremely active and has a first-rate reputation, he may not be able to handle emergency service calls as swiftly as desired. In business you sometimes have to make compromises to keep a low price for quality work. High quality means bringing on competent technicians, and good people are not cheap, so don't try to value your services too low either.

In many cases a plumbing contractor will make a low bid proposal on purpose with the goal of finding some "unseen" expenses later. Maybe "the parts cost more than expected", etc.. Many of the plumbing companies you see advertised offer low prices and do the job swiftly. But this doesn't automatically mean you get a high-quality piece of work. In a good number of cases this objective simply causes more problems than it solves. If you are a plumbing contractor who is looking for the fast buck you will end up with irate customers who want you to return to fix the root problem or give them their money back. As a customer of a second-rate plumber you can easily be frustrated when the work you had done was not performed correctly from the beginning.

Discounted plumbers often are not licensed or insured. Unfortunately, it may be that an injury to the uninsured plumber on your property may lead to you being held liable for his medical bills. An additional way that cheap plumbers reduce costs is to use low quality parts and fixtures. If you are given a bid that appears too good to be true, make sure you get a guarantee on the quality of the work and parts. On the other hand, don't get talked into paying too much for any plumbing work. You should have an idea as to the cost of major parts or fixtures. You can get good rough figures simply by checking plumbing supplies at the websites of Home Depot or comparable home improvement stores. It is entirely reasonable for a customer to let the plumber know that he wants a specific model of water heater and how much it should cost.

Good plumbers get a lot of business by word of mouth. Satisfied customers remember them and they suggest them to their friends. An expensive plumber may have to expend more money on advertising simply because they get a lot less repeat business. They may also have high overhead in the form of a big building and a lot of vehicles, some of which may not even be in use at the time. They need to have the additional money to compensate for these expenses so they have to charge more. The solution is to find a plumbing contractor that focuses on both quality and service at a fair price. That being said, even the best contractor may not be able to meet every emergency need you may have. In this case it is good to have a backup plumber you can call when your main plumber is not available.
